Nutritional Supplements – everyone has heard about them, used them, and even suggested them to family and friends. But how much do you really know about them?
Being a subject of debate, nutritional supplements are linked to many questions. Should I take them? Many people take nutritional supplements because they believe that they offer health benefits.
Do they even work? Yes, but it is important that you speak with your holistic doctor about which supplements would benefit you the most based on your medical history.
Which supplements are best for me? Get tested by your doctor so that you know if you have nutritional deficiencies. Some people may need to take certain types of supplements because they have a deficiency in certain vitamins or minerals.
Nutritional supplements are a multi-billion dollar industry and growing every year. The promise of better health and vitality fuels this industry, but do nutritional supplements really work? And if they do, under what conditions do they improve health?
The answer to the first question is a qualified yes. Nutritional supplements can improve health, but only if the person taking them has a deficiency in a particular nutrient. It is important that you get tested by your doctor so that you know exactly what nutritional deficiencies you might be experiencing.
For example, someone who is deficient in vitamin D will likely see an improvement in their health when they start taking a vitamin D supplement. However, for those who do not have nutritional deficiencies but don’t have optimal vitamin levels, supplements can also improve their health.
The answer to the second question is more complex. Nutritional supplements can improve many different aspects of health, such as energy levels, immune function, and overall well-being.
The list goes on. Information about dietary supplements is generally quite confusing.
Some people believe that taking physician-formulated supplements is better than taking supplements that are available over the counter. Physicians Formulated supplements are a specific line of supplements that have been developed by physicians to ensure they deliver optimal health results.
Nutritional pills serve the purpose to supplement the nutrients missing from one’s diet in order to promote better health, weight loss, boost energy, or overcome deficiencies. Dietary supplements are widely available in health food stores, grocery stores, pharmacies, and on the Internet. As a matter of fact, the majority of the United States population consumes dietary supplements daily or weekly for health and fitness. Nutritional supplements can be minerals, vitamins, amino acids, proteins, or parts of these substances. In short, these are substances that we eat or drink. These are add-ons in our diet and should not be consumed in place of regular meals. As each and every man-made item comes with its own pros and cons, so do these nutritional supplements.
Pros: our poor dietary habits (which include, not eating sufficient food, eating a particular type of food in excess, etc) eventually lead us to nutritional deficiencies. We can make up for these deficiencies by taking nutritional supplements, whilst still sticking to our lifestyle or munching on the same selective foods that we enjoy eating.
Sticking to nutritional supplements is easier than following a verified (variety of) diet – not that it’s a recommended dietary lifestyle. However, it can be opted for as it doesn’t cause any serious health complications. Also, there are certain nutrients, whose requirements cannot be fulfilled by food, no matter how much of a particular food we consume.
For instance Calcium and Vitamin D, their dietary supplementation along with food are now being promoted as compulsory.
Anabolic conditions such as pregnancy, the rapid growth of children, healing from burns, trauma, or surgeries are insufficient for food alone to fulfill the bodily requirements in these conditions and therefore require supplements.
Cons: these pills aren’t so economical if an individual relies on them for daily nutrition. In addition to that, if a person does not eat adequately and takes supplements so that he or she may not have to face any deficiencies, it’s definitely not going to be cheap.
A single pill cannot substitute for all the nutrients required in a balanced diet. Moreover, some nutritional supplements react with other supplements. So taking a combination of supplements or using the products with prescribed medications can cause dangerous interactions which could be life-threatening. Excessive doses, as well, are known to cause health problems.
In a nutshell, just because something is available in the market doesn’t mean it’s completely safe. For this reason, it is recommended to ask your doctor or dietitian about the possible side effects with any other medications being taken before you decide to take a specific nutritional pill(s) and make sure to consume it in suitable amounts in order to get the desired results.

It caught my attention when you said that adding supplements to our diet lets us improve our health without changing our lifestyle too much. I’ve been wanting to make some small, manageable changes in my lifestyle to make sure I’m actually able to change my habits and become more healthy. Maybe I’ll look for a business opportunity where I can use and sell supplements now that I understand some of the benefits they offer!
