Slippery elm bark contains mucilage — a complex polysaccharide that forms a gel when mixed with water. This gel coats and soothes the mucous membranes of the esophagus, stomach, and intestines, reducing irritation and inflammation. The mucilage also acts as a prebiotic, feeding beneficial gut bacteria, and has mild antioxidant properties.
Provides direct mechanical protection and soothing of the gut lining — particularly valuable in leaky gut, IBS, GERD, and inflammatory bowel conditions. Unlike most gut-healing ingredients that work through biochemical pathways, slippery elm works through direct physical coating of the gut mucosa.
Traditional use supported by modern research. Studies confirm reduction in IBS symptoms, improvement in bowel regularity, and soothing effects in inflammatory bowel conditions. Approved by the FDA as a safe and effective demulcent.
400–500mg 3 times daily, ideally 30 minutes before meals. Best taken with plenty of water to allow the mucilage to hydrate and coat the gut lining. Can be taken long-term safely.
