Milk Thistle (Silymarin)
Silymarin (the active flavonoid complex in milk thistle) protects hepatocytes through multiple mechanisms: it inhibits the uptake of toxins into liver cells, stimulates ribosomal RNA synthesis to accelerate liver cell regeneration, acts as a potent antioxidant in liver tissue, and modulates inflammatory signaling in the liver.
It also supports Phase I and Phase II liver detoxification enzyme activity.
The liver is the primary organ for hormone clearance — including estrogen, cortisol, and thyroid hormones. When the liver is overburdened, hormone metabolism is impaired, contributing to estrogen dominance and hormonal imbalance. Milk thistle supports the liver's capacity to process and clear hormones efficiently.
Extensive clinical research including multiple RCTs and meta-analyses. A 2005 Cochrane review confirmed hepatoprotective effects. Studies confirm benefits in alcoholic liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and toxic liver injury. Silymarin is used as a prescription medication in Europe for liver conditions.
150–300mg standardized to 70–80% silymarin, 2–3 times daily. Best taken with meals. Well-tolerated long-term. May enhance the clearance of certain medications — consult physician if on hepatically metabolized drugs.
