Melatonin

Melatonin is produced by the pineal gland in response to darkness and signals the body to prepare for sleep.

How It Works

Melatonin is produced by the pineal gland in response to darkness and signals the body to prepare for sleep. It binds to MT1 and MT2 receptors in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (the brain's master clock) to shift circadian phase and reduce core body temperature — both essential for sleep onset. Melatonin does not induce sleep directly; it signals the appropriate biological time for sleep.

Why It's in Our Formulas

SleepEasy™ uses a physiological dose (0.5–1mg) rather than the pharmacological doses (5–10mg) commonly sold. Higher doses can cause morning grogginess, disrupt natural melatonin production over time, and paradoxically worsen sleep quality. The goal is to restore the natural melatonin signal, not override it.

Clinical Evidence

Extensive clinical research confirms melatonin's effectiveness for sleep onset, jet lag, and circadian rhythm disorders. A 2013 meta-analysis showed significant improvement in sleep onset latency and total sleep time. Lower doses (0.5–1mg) are as effective as higher doses for most individuals with fewer side effects.

Dosing & Timing

0.5–1mg taken 30–60 minutes before desired sleep time. Consistency matters more than dose — taking it at the same time nightly reinforces the circadian signal. Avoid bright light exposure after taking melatonin.

"Most people are taking 10mg of melatonin and wondering why they feel groggy. That's a pharmacological dose, not a physiological one. We use 0.5–1mg — enough to signal sleep, not enough to override your system."
