Magnesium is a cofactor for over 600 enzymatic reactions including those involved in ATP production, protein synthesis, and neurotransmitter regulation. For sleep specifically, magnesium activates the parasympathetic nervous system, regulates NMDA receptors (reducing neural excitability), and supports GABA receptor function. Glycinate chelation dramatically improves absorption and reduces the laxative effect of other magnesium forms.
Magnesium deficiency is extremely common (estimated 68% of Americans) and is directly linked to insomnia, anxiety, muscle cramps, and restless legs — all common sleep disruptors. Magnesium glycinate is the preferred form for sleep support because glycine itself has independent sleep-promoting effects.
Multiple studies confirm magnesium's role in sleep quality. A 2012 RCT showed significant improvement in sleep efficiency, sleep time, and early morning awakening in elderly subjects with insomnia. Magnesium glycinate specifically has superior bioavailability and tolerability compared to oxide, citrate, or sulfate forms.
200–400mg elemental magnesium as glycinate, taken 1–2 hours before bed. The glycine component provides additional calming effects. Can also be taken throughout the day for anxiety and muscle tension.
