Licorice Root Extract
Glycyrrhizin in licorice root inhibits 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 (11β-HSD2) — the enzyme that converts active cortisol to inactive cortisone in peripheral tissues.
Glycyrrhizin in licorice root inhibits 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 (11β-HSD2) — the enzyme that converts active cortisol to inactive cortisone in peripheral tissues. By inhibiting this enzyme, licorice root extends the half-life of cortisol, allowing the body's existing cortisol to remain active longer. This effectively amplifies the adrenal gland's cortisol output without stimulating additional production.
Used specifically in adrenal fatigue protocols where cortisol production is insufficient. Rather than stimulating the adrenal gland to produce more cortisol (which can worsen burnout), licorice root makes the existing cortisol last longer — a more sustainable approach to cortisol support.
Well-established mechanism confirmed in multiple pharmacological studies. Clinical use in functional medicine for adrenal fatigue is supported by case series and clinical experience. The cortisol-sparing effect is dose-dependent.
Use with caution in patients with hypertension — glycyrrhizin can raise blood pressure through mineralocorticoid-like effects at higher doses. DGL (deglycyrrhizinated licorice) does not have this effect but also lacks the cortisol-sparing benefit. The dose in AdrenaCare (100mg) is below the threshold for blood pressure effects in most individuals.
