L-Theanine
L-theanine is a non-protein amino acid found almost exclusively in green tea.
L-theanine is a non-protein amino acid found almost exclusively in green tea. It crosses the blood-brain barrier and increases alpha brain wave activity — the state associated with calm, focused alertness. It also increases GABA, serotonin, and dopamine levels while reducing excitatory glutamate activity. Unlike benzodiazepines, it produces relaxation without sedation or cognitive impairment.
The ideal anxiolytic for daytime use — it calms the nervous system without impairing function. In SerenCalm™, it works synergistically with GABA to address both the central nervous system (brain) and peripheral nervous system (gut-brain axis) dimensions of anxiety.
Multiple RCTs confirm L-theanine's anxiolytic effects. A 2019 meta-analysis (Hidese et al.) showed significant reductions in stress and anxiety. EEG studies confirm alpha wave enhancement within 30–40 minutes of ingestion. Particularly effective when combined with caffeine for focus without jitteriness.
100–200mg is the effective dose range. Effects are felt within 30–60 minutes. Can be taken as needed for acute stress or daily for chronic anxiety management. No tolerance development or dependency risk.
"L-theanine is what I recommend to patients who say they can't turn their brain off. It quiets the noise without making them feel medicated."
