Alpha lipoic acid is a unique "universal antioxidant" — it is both fat-soluble and water-soluble, allowing it to work in all cellular compartments. It regenerates vitamins C and E, glutathione, and CoQ10 after they have been oxidized. ALA also activates the Nrf2 pathway (similar to sulforaphane), upregulating the body's endogenous antioxidant defenses. In neurons, it supports mitochondrial energy production by serving as a cofactor for pyruvate dehydrogenase and alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase.
Provides comprehensive antioxidant protection across all cellular compartments — particularly important for neurons, which have high metabolic rates and are especially vulnerable to oxidative damage. ALA's ability to regenerate other antioxidants makes it a "force multiplier" for the entire antioxidant network.
Extensive research in diabetic neuropathy, cognitive decline, and metabolic health. A 2004 meta-analysis confirmed significant improvement in diabetic neuropathy symptoms. Studies also confirm benefits for insulin sensitivity, liver health, and cognitive function.
300–600mg daily. R-ALA (the natural form) is more bioavailable than the synthetic racemic mixture. Best taken on an empty stomach 30 minutes before meals. May lower blood sugar — monitor if on diabetes medications.
